At the center of it all is Gary Pettinella, a Derby native whose passion for food, hospitality, and community runs deep. Gary learned the art of pizza making from his father, who owned the beloved Napolitano’s in the 1980s. That tradition and love for great food continues today at Retro Bar & Char, where every pizza carries a piece of that family legacy.

Today, Retro Bar & Char is truly a family business. Gary’s daughter, Emily, has joined him as co-owner, bringing fresh energy while continuing the values that made Retro special from the start. Together they have created a welcoming spot with a nostalgic, throwback feel—where live entertainment, vintage touches, and a laid-back atmosphere make everyone feel comfortable the moment they walk in.

Gary’s commitment to supporting others extends beyond the bar. He has long supported Seymour Pink, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women battling breast cancer. The cause is especially meaningful to Gary, who lost both his mother and his aunt to the disease.

Community is a big part of the Retro story. Gary and Emily proudly support local police and fire departments, and the walls feature patches from departments across towns and states—a symbol of appreciation for those who serve.
